Bookfriends Annual Membership Party this Sunday

On Sunday, November 23 from 4 -6 p.m. the University Press of Mississippi will be holding its annual BOOKFRIENDS fall membership party at Brent’s Drugs in Fondren. This year’s party will celebrate three UPM books and their authors – Song of My Life: A Biography of Margaret Walker, by Carolyn J. Brown; Assassins, Eccentrics, Politicians, and Other Persons of Interest: Fifty Pieces from the Road, by Curtis Wilkie; and Ed King's Mississippi: Behind the Scenes of Freedom Summer, by Rev. Ed King and Trent Watts.

A short program will feature each author talking about their book. All three authors will also be available to sign copies of their book.

Gerry Wilson, president of the Bookfriends board, explains that Bookfriends is a diverse group of booklovers who cheerlead for the Press and its authors. “Once a year, we have a bang-up membership party. And this year, the party focuses on three Mississippi authors with connections to Civil Rights era history. Brent’s is a great retro location for celebrating that time in Mississippi's story.” She continues, “Personally, I’ve loved working with Bookfriends and the Press. UPM should be a source of pride for all Mississippians.”

Leila Salisbury, director of University Press of Mississippi, “Through our speakers, who will address Mississippi’s literary, civil rights, and political history, we’re honoring the rich stories and people that make our part of the South such a fascinating place. So much of the work of Bookfriends involves connecting the Press more widely and deeply with a reading community, and they couldn’t have done it in a better way for this year’s event.”

“This year’s Bookfriends annual Membership Party is a perfect marriage of that fun and the deeper meaning behind what we do at the University Press. By being in Fondren at Brent’s we’re also celebrating our local community and what it has to offer.”

This event is open to the public. Annual memberships are $50 and persons under 35 may purchase a membership for $35 and is payable at the event. You can also purchase a ticket via the Paypal link below.
