The Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters will honor its 2012 recipients next weekend. Included among the award winners is Susan Haltom, who along with Jane Roy Brown and Langdon Clay, authored One Writer's Garden: Eudora Welty's Home Place. One Writer’s Garden was honored in the nonfiction category.

One Writer’s Garden is an exploration of the garden Welty tended with her mother and how that work affected her writing. Near the end of her life, Welty still resided in her parents’ house, but the garden fell into neglect when Welty no longer had the strength to care for it. Haltom, also a garden designer, offered to help preserve the garden and spent ten years restoring the green space.
After her death, Welty’s private papers confirmed that she had sought both inspiration and a creative outlet from her garden. One Writer’s Garden contains many previously unpublished writings, including literary passages and excerpts from Welty’s private correspondence about the garden.

The Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters will hold an awards ceremony on Saturday, June 9 at the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson. There will also be readings and signings by MIAL Award Winners at Lemuria Bookstore on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
