UPM at the Eisner Awards

Nominations for the 2012 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards have been announced. Two UPM titles are being considered a the category of Best Educational/Academic Work: Alan Moore: Conversations, ed. by Eric Berlatsky and Hand of Fire: The Comics Art of Jack Kirby, by Charles Hatfield. The Educational/Academic category is new to the Eisner Awards this year. 

The nominees, chosen by a blue-ribbon panel of judges, reflect the wide range of material being published in comics and graphic novel form today, from nursery rhymes and World War II battles to high school angst and pulp fiction. 

Hand of Fire: The Comics Art of Jack Kirby examines the artistic legacy of one of America’s true comic-book giants, analyzing the development of Kirby’s technique, the recurring themes in his work, his use of dynamic composition and moral ambiguity in his art and writing, his eventual split from Stan Lee, and his later work as a solo artist. 

Alan Moore: Conversations collects ten interviews, beginning with Moore’s first published conversation, conducted by V for Vendetta co-creator David Lloyd in 1981.The other nine conversations cover nearly all of Moore’s major work, including Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Swamp Thing, Marvelman, The League of Extraordinary Gentleman, Promethea, From Hell, Lost Girls, and the unfinished Big Numbers

Named for acclaimed comics creator the Will Eisner, the awards are in their 24th year of highlighting the best publications and creators in comics and graphic novels. The results in all categories will be announced in a gala awards ceremony on the evening of Friday, July 13 at Comic-Con International.
